Cambridge-born trombonist Tom Green makes a fine debut here with his latter-day Dankworth 7, recorded at Real World in April last year.

With the ex-Royal Academy of Music postgraduate student are saxophonists Matthew Herd and Sam Miles, trumpeter James Davison, pianist Sam James, bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado, and drummer Scott Chapman. Highly assured and mature with a defining pastoral slightly bittersweet warmly acoustic Gil Evans-like chamber jazz complexion to it, strong ensemble rapport throughout, trumpeter/flugel player Davison infinitely more Kenny Wheeler-like than Jimmy Deuchar on the most significant tune, the long deliciously melancholic ‘Equilibrium.’ Mullov-Abbado, a rising star also making a name for himself, surfaces tantalisingly on the laconic ‘Arctic Sun’, the ensemble showing their consummate skill as a unit in developing softer more subtle textures, the trombonist leader taking a characterful solo reminiscent a little of Robin Eubanks in his Dave Holland days. The majority of the compositions are Green’s, each carefully arranged with contoured segments, his slightly sentimental arrangement of ‘Skylark’ a side salad to the main course. Stephen Graham
