On the Smoke Sessions Records label trumpeter, keyboardist and composer Nicholas Payton has a double CD out. Bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington are on the record with him. Stocked with original compositions and a few standards recorded at Smoke in New York tunes in addition to the title track Relaxin’ With Nick includes ‘El Guajiro’ from Afro-Caribbean Mixtape that samples Cuban trumpeter Manuel “Guajiro” Mirabal, ‘Jazz Is a Four-Letter Word’ using a Max Roach monologue, Benny Golson’s ‘Stablemates’, ‘Tea for Two’, ‘I Hear a Rhapsody’, ‘When I Fall In Love,’ and ‘Praalude’ from Sonic Trance. Payton has been quoted by his publicity people as saying: “There’s no greater compliment to me than people being able to hook up or party or converse in whatever fashion necessary. I’m happy to have my music be a part of fun and romance and the life force. To me, this is the point.”
