After his very well received Thump festival shows at the end of May Pizza Express Jazz Club has moved quickly to re-book the star Cameroonian bassist vocalist for a late-September return to the London club. Bona at Thump was supposed to have appeared with Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba who cancelled for unannounced reasons at the last minute but Bona’s personality, let along his musicianship, carried the gig that night to new levels with New York-based pianist Osmany Paredes stepping into the breach. The Cameroonian, who first came to international prominence with the Zawinul Syndicate, the club is saying will appear on 27 September playing to two separate houses with a band featuring keyboardist Etienne Stadwjik, trumpeter Tatum Greenblatt, and drummer Ludwig Alfonso. Bona’s latest album Bonafied came out earlier this year but it has suffered from poor promotion and news of its release has been slow to filter through. On it the bassist covers latin-jazz, tango, makossa, and chanson with a cover of James Taylor’s ‘On the Fourth of July’ with the ballad ‘Mulema’ the big song. Tickets www.pizzaexpresslive.co.uk
