Romain Pilon is the latest artist to be signed by Whirlwind Recordings with the guitarist’s first album for the label, Colorfield, to be released on 7 October, the label says.

A quartet album featuring the Paris-based player in the company of saxophonist Walter Smith III, who Pilon knew at Berklee more than a decade ago (Smith is now best known for his work as a member of the Ambrose Akinmusire quintet); bassist Michael Janisch, again a Berklee student in Boston around the same time as Pilon and Smith; and drummer Jamire Williams, who’s well known for his work with Christian Scott among others and who Pilon got to know later in New York.

The new album features Horace Silver’s ‘Lonely Woman’ and several originals, and takes its name from a 1940s and 50s New York school of abstract painting.
