More details are beginning to filter through about the imminent Sons of Kemet debut album Burn set to drop on 9 September with the cover seen here for the first time. Track titles of the Naim records release are confirmed as: ‘All Will Surely Burn’, a tune about global warming; ‘The Godfather’, a  tribute to Mulatu Astatke;  ‘Inner Babylon’, about the cultural hegemony of the US; ‘The Book of Disquiet’, inspired by Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa; ‘Going Home’ with guest Dave Okumu of The Invisible; ‘Adonia’s Lullaby’ again with Okumu guesting; ‘Song For Galeano’, a nod to Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano; ‘Beware’; ‘The Itis’; and the Caribbean/Rastafarian standard ‘Rivers of Babylon’. ‘Kemet’ in the band name refers to an early name for ancient Egypt and an extra connection is that the ancient land’s last Nubian king was called Shabaka, coincidentally the first name of clarinettist/saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings the band’s leader. Hutchings is joined by tuba player Oren Marshall, and drummers Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford (who has produced the album). The band has been gigging together for the past two years building a strong following on the London jazz club circuit.
