Linley Hamilton and David Lyttle’s Interlude are Wigan bound
While Wigan is the spiritual home of northern soul a different kind of northern sound, with a jazz inflection and a different geographical axis, is featured at next month’s Wigan Jazz Festival, with some of the leading lights of the newly resurgent jazz scene in Northern Ireland among the line-up. The road to Wigan pier is one drummer David Lyttle and his soul and hip hop-influenced band Interlude featuring keyboards star Jason Rebello and Lyttle’s sister Rhea will be taking for this year’s festival to be held from 11-14 July in Wigan. And also on their way to the Lancashire town is Belfast trumpeter Linley Hamilton (in action with blues guitarist Ronnie Greer at the weekend in Enniskillen) billed to perform with his sextet. Also for Wigan this year are the Darius Brubeck trio, highly rated local jazz singer Georgina Jackson, smooth jazzer Snake Davis, trad/mainstream institution the Dutch Swing College Band, and the Igor Butman big band from Russia.
