Garzone to hit the 6 on the 26th
Saxophonist’s saxophonist, the Bostonian George Garzone, is confirmed to play the 606 club in London, a rare appearance by the player who last performed in the UK in 2010. A Berklee professor held in considerable esteem Garzone has also taught a who’s who of top players over the years including Branford Marsalis and Joshua Redman, but he’s better known for his winning no-nonsense tenor sound and technical mastery in a saxophone tradition that owes its roots in the music of John Coltrane an approach continued by Michael Brecker. Known for his band the Fringe and celebrated appearances in the bands of Joe Lovano and Kenny Werner, Garzone has also recorded with artists as diverse in their approach as the late George Russell, Danilo Pérez and Luciana Souza. The cult saxophonist has also worked with British jazz luminary Martin Taylor on the guitarist’s Kiss and Tell album for Sony as well as appearing on Scottish saxophonist Leah Gough-Cooper’s record Future Pop more recently. Gough-Cooper is one of the newer Brit-jazz generation players making their mark internationally. Garzone is to appear at the 606 in late-June in a two-pronged front line with Italian saxophonist Carlo Conti, the quartet completed by bassist Conor Chaplin best known for his lively tenure in prog-jazz outfit WorldService Project, and drummer Dave Hamblett of the Ivo Neame octet who debuted as a leader with Light at Night last year.  Tickets for the 26 June concert are £17 and obtainable via www.606club.co.uk
