After the excitement of a one-off appearance today by the force of nature that is the current version of the Count Basie Orchestra, Gary Burton, Roy Haynes and Julian Joseph all appear at Ronnie Scott’s in London this week while the Late Late Show is worth sticking around for on Wednesday night when guitarist Femi Temowo features with his lively quartet.

Veteran singer Sheila Jordan is at the Pizza Express Jazz Club nearby in Soho tomorrow, and there’s a mainstream flavour on the following nights with Howard Alden and Warren Vaché in the house. By the end of the week there’s a return to the cutting edge with Zhenya Strigalev and his Smiling Organizm band and look out for Charles Lloyd drummer Eric Harland and pianist Liam Noble in the Russian saxophonist’s band.

Last week the Vortex won the Live Jazz award at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards, and at the Dalston club this week catch the Oriole and Basquiat Strings two-day residency on Friday and Saturday, while in Chelsea at the 606 the week before the club celebrates its 25th anniversary with a special festival opened by Pat Martino the build-up continues. Hear pianist Alex Hutton, a highlight on Wednesday, and Benet McLean on Thursday. Singers Trudy Kerr and Ingrid James are in the Lots Road basement spot on Saturday.

Back in Soho check the Barry Green trio with singer Sara Mitra at the Spice of Life (near the Palace theatre) on Wednesday; and later in the week at the Bull’s Head in Barnes pop in to hear Zoe Francis with Jim Mullen, Dave Newton, and Dave Green. Don’t forget John Etheridge’s Sweet Chorus are at Boisdale Canary Wharf on Friday as part of the club’s Guitar Greats series.

Beyond the capital Snake Davis plays the Spin in Oxford on Wednesday, and on the same night bassist Tim Thornton plays Jazzland in Swansea with his quartet; while at Dempsey’s in Cardiff Indigo Kid are the big draw this week appearing on Thursday. Matt and Phred’s in Manchester on Friday present young fogeys the Dixie Ticklers playing the hell out of Jelly Roll Morton and early jazz, while promising Leeds-based Canadian drummer Katie Patterson’s Allsorts band are at the Lescar in Sheffield on Wednesday. Sue Richardson’s Too Cool, celebrating the music of Chet Baker, reach the Verdict in Brighton on Friday, and in Bristol on the same night Indigo Kid make their way to the Bebop club. MB
