Jeremy Lyons popped up with his dectet at the 2014 Brilliant Corners festival, his inclusion based partly on a hunch of the festival director Brian Carson who wanted to put on new talent.

Some of the saxophonist’s earlier work, at least the bits I managed to track down, weren’t that exciting to be frank however The Promise of Happiness, (Phia Records ***1/2) recorded in west London during the last two days of May 2015, is a significant reset. Lyons is probably more of a composer in the new Cool School domain primarily.

Anyone into Lee Konitz or Martin Speake will probably gravitate towards his approach as might late-1940s Royal Roost vintage Milesians. All the eight compositions on The Promise... which is to be released in early-December are Lyons’, the title track the penultimate number.

Listen above to a sample from the opening part of the album. Among the 11-strong Lyons-led ensemble are Hans Koller on piano, Tom Harrison on flute and alto sax, and Yazz Ahmed, trumpet and flugel. The pivotal bass part is taken by Dave Whitford a stalwart scenester often appearing at the Riepler Sunday night Vortex session and who you might have heard perform with the singer Christine Tobin.
