“From the first release up to now, it’s been about taking that spirit of the Buena Vista Social Club to show a new generation of artists and opening it up to as big an audience as possible. Picking the tracks for this anthology, I wanted to show modern Cuba alongside the remixes, putting it in the context of a global club culture.”

That is how Gilles Peterson describes his continuing explorations into Cuban music and released later this month is a triple vinyl set containing 23 tracks that span eight years of musical research and experimentation into Cuba’s musical avant-garde curated by Peterson and sponsored by the Havana Cultura project, an offshoot of a rum making firm in Cuba.

Peterson’s record label Brownswood Recordings released the double album compilation Havana Cultura: New Cuba Sound, which encompassed jazz, hip-hop and reggaeton. Solo releases following also included new music and remixes and in 2011 Havana Cultura: The Search Continues, which had a dubstep flavour and also made connections with UK soundsystem culture.

A debut album by singer Daymé Arocena was also released last year and this year Havana Club Rumba Sessions marked a return to Cuba for the Peterson crew and explorations of guaguancó, yambú and columbia remixed by a number of producers ensued.
