It’s disappointing that there isn’t more jazz at the Belfast International Arts Festival this autumn but the good news is that what there is features pianist Justin Kauflin in his first Northern Ireland appearance.

The virtuoso US pianist’s most recent album Dedication released last year wasn’t exactly hindered either by the presence of co-producer Quincy Jones who has done much to champion his career to date.

And mentored by the late Clark Terry, an early influence on Miles Davis, Kauflin also features in a new documentary about Terry called Keep On Keepin’ On (featured in the clip above).

Born in Silver Spring, Maryland, in 1986, by the age of 11 Kauflin had lost all his sight but remarkably went on to earn a presidential scholarship to William Paterson university in New Jersey where he was mentored by Terry. Kauflin’s first CD as a leader Introducing Justin Kauflin was released in 2008.

The gig is at the Black Box in the Cathedral Quarter, Belfast on 25 October
