I’d rate Rory Simmons as the most consistently creative multi-talented trumpeter around on the UK jazz scene. While a very different player he shares in inventiveness and musical ingenuity with fellow trumpeters Laura Jurd and Percy Pursglove also at the forefront of new jazz here. And that’s not all as Simmons has a knack for forming interesting bands from Fringe Magnetic to Eyes of a Blue Dog and Monocled Man, whether chamber jazz, electronica or freebop in character, all usually a world away from his day job playing jazz pop with Jamie Cullum.

September sees the latest album from Monocled Man, We Drift Meridian, a trio featuring guitarist Chris Montague from Troyka and Jon Scott from Kairos 4tet plus guests Emilia Mårtensson and the Thom Yorke-like vocals of Ed Begley.

Released by Whirlwind on 23 September, see video above
