After a brief tenure on Blue Note, trumpeter Takuya Kuroda has switched label to return in the autumn with his fifth studio album, this time for Concord.

Best known for his sideman work with singer José James the Japanese player’s new album, Zigzagger, navigates jazz, soul and hip-hop by way of classic Lee Morgan album The Sidewinder as one of the inspirations running cheek by jowl with the more recent electronica of Flying Lotus and J Dilla also factored in to the mix.

With Kuroda on the album are a band who include trombonist/vocalist Corey King, bassist Rashaan Carter, drummer and percussionist Adam Jackson and the band’s most recent addition, keyboardist Takeshi Ohbayashi. Brooklyn Afrobeat band Antibalas also gain a cameo on the Kuroda-produced affair, which is expected to be released in October.
