Fifty years of jazz from Europe is under discussion this week at a conference of academics in Edinburgh.

Continental Drift is hosted by Edinburgh Napier University, in association with the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival, and mounts panel discussions, presentations and performances, aimed the organisers say “at a broad audience” and “will provide an opportunity for insight into European jazz and the communities, networks, institutions and industries that support and sustain it.” There is still time – before Thursday afternoon this week – to register, festival attendees gaining free admission to one of three Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival Europe concerts (either Marcin Wasilewski Trio, John McLaughlin 4th Dimension, or the Magnus Öström Band). The conference is premiering a film about Portuguese jazz called Those Who Make It Happen and the keynote address will be given by Professor Tony Whyton.
