As tenor saxophone titan Joe Lovano stacks up an extraordinary 25 albums on Blue Note records later this month with the release of a 2005 live album from the Newport Jazz Festival recorded with his quartet of the time featuring pianist Hank Jones (1918-2010), bassist George Mraz and drummer Lewis Nash, to whet your appetite most of the tracks from the new album are on this live German appearance recorded during the same summer as the Newport performance, Lovano with the exact same band. Relevant tunes here include Lovano original ‘Bird’s Eye View,’ Thad Jones’ ‘Don’t Ever Leave Me’ and ‘Kids Are Pretty People,’ big Joe’s ‘I'm All For You’ and Oliver Nelson’s ‘Six and Four.’ Classic, Live at Newport is to be released on 29 July.
