Released this week is a new live solo album from one of the most influential US jazz pianists, Selma composer Jason Moran.

It is a set of original compositions presented under the title of The Armory Concert and which was recorded in March 2016 at the restored and reopened 19th century Park Avenue Armory in New York City.

The new album concept of solo piano is relatively rare in Moran’s extensive discography, and will especially fascinate loyal fans of the long time Charles Lloyd New Quartet pianist who may well be returning to Moran’s much earlier work such as solo album Modernistic released 14 years ago to chart and reflect on the artistic growth of a remarkable player in the light of this new work.

Listen to a version of ‘Reanimation,’ written for a collaboration with multimedia artist Joan Jonas, from the album above.

In a different context on 2 July during Art Night at Southwark Cathedral in London Jonas and Moran will perform the UK premiere of 'Reanimation,' which is inspired by the 1960s Halldór Laxness novel Under the Glacier. Drawings, objects, close-circuit
video projections and choreographed actions are accompanied by live improvised music by Moran, with percussive interludes by Jonas, interwoven with a spoken narrative from the novel. Stephen Graham
