The death from cancer at 73 of cult jazz flautist Jeremy Steig, who died in Japan in April has now been more widely reported. An obituary has just been published in The New York Times.

Steig debuted in 1963 with Flute Fever produced by John Hammond, later leading Jeremy and the Satyrs who backed singer Tim Hardin. Steig later collaborated with Bill Evans on What’s New towards the end of the 1960s.

His sideman credits included appearances on Johnny Winter, Art Farmer, and Hank Crawford records while his own albums as leader included work released by the Columbia, Verve, and Blue Note labels. The son of Shrek writer William Steig, the Beastie Boys sampled the 1970 Steig track ‘Howlin’ for Judy,’ in the 1990s on their single ‘Sure Shot.’
