The most acclaimed Welsh jazz pianist of his generation, Huw Warren – known for his work most recently with Quercus, a long running folk-jazz trio that he is a member of with singer June Tabor and saxophonist Iain Ballamy – has a new solo album out soon, and you can listen to a preview track, ‘EE’ from the album which was recorded in Cardiff and is titled Nocturnes and Visions, above.

Warren, recently in China with his trio, says of the album: “It includes several new pieces of mine as well as a solo version of ‘EE’ [the final track of a 1990s Perfect Houseplants album Snap Clatter], a composition by Hermeto Pascoal and Guinga, and two pieces based on Bach preludes (from The Well-Tempered Clavier).”

In his early career Perfect Houseplants days with saxophonist Mark Lockheart, bassist Dudley Philips and future Spin Marvel drummer Martin France, folk music, contemporary jazz, tangos and waltzes were all part of the mix, and to a certain extent Warren’s approach in his own bands has never faltered from this initial springboard journeying ever on. This new album, however, is one of his most intimate and personal to date.
