Lovely Rita: Brahem for China

Are more jazz artists from the West playing China? Huw Warren is there at the moment, and there’s more....

...take this month, a Shanghai surprise you might choose to alliterate, as the huge metropolis prepares to host a range of ECM artists, concerts running through to the middle of next month.

The German label has been developing its distribution in south east Asia, already reaching out to South Korea via past initiatives.

Oud player Anouar Brahem, guitarist Egberto Gismonti, the Tomasz Stanko ‘New York’ Quartet (via Finland and Belgium, the great trumpeter with pianist Alexi Tuomarila and from the US bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Gerald Cleaver), cult Swiss singer, the EE Cummings-loving, Susanne Abbuehl, the Keller Quartet, and Myung Whun Chung conducting the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra are part of what Chinese audiences will hear in the series.

The label will also mount an exhibition of artwork that features a range of the work by its house photographers and graphic designers. SG
