One of a very small number of elder statesman global jazz icons still delivering must-attend concerts, Abdullah Ibrahim plays this solo piano Dublin appearance at the National Concert Hall on 4 March during a momentous year in Ireland as 2016 marks the centenary of the Easter Rising that paved the way towards the country’s independence.

Equally as revered a cultural figure as Hugh Masekela, Ibrahim has also made the political a personal and spiritual musical quest during his career and in his music has guided his own message music wisely piercing deep into the hearts, minds and wider consciousness of jazz fans the world over as South Africa suffered and then was liberated from the evils of Apartheid.

Now in his early-eighties Ibrahim’s recent records have included the 2014 Intuition album The Song Is My Story as well as the reissues of Ancient AfricaFats, Duke & The Monk and African Piano.

The Song Is My Story was recorded just months before Ibrahim turned 80, over a couple of days at a concert hall in Sacile in Italy, with the accompanying DVD adding a document of further time spent in the city of Sacile itself where the Fazioli piano factory is also located. Bookended by Ibrahim playing saxophone the otherwise solo piano set covers material drawn from his repertoire plus freely improvised creations.
