Written by Stan Tracey’s son jazz drummer Clark,The Godfather of British Jazz: The Life and Music of Stan Tracey is to be published in the spring.

By year end 2016 will also mark the passing of 90 years since the birth of Stan Tracey.

The book, a 256-page biography of the distinguished Ellington and Monk-influenced pianist and composer who died two years ago, is issued in April by Sheffield-based Equinox in their Popular Music History series.

The book is partly based on Stans own diaries and interviews.

The phrase “godfather of British jazz” referring to Tracey was used in a John Akomfrah-directed 2003 documentary and has since been widely adopted. It is understood to have been coined by Guardian jazz critic John Fordham who also took part in the TV film.
