There’s a lot of great jazz in store in September after the much quieter August period. And it’s not the same old faces or star names either.

Pete McCann has been around quite a while as a Cinderella sideman in New York. You might have seen him at the 55 Bar. But despite having quite a few albums chalked up under his own name, on Range he certainly does go to the ball.

Have a look at the short video above as McCann sets out his stall.

On the album the guitarist plays with saxist John O’Gallagher, keyboardist Henry Hey, bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Mark Ferber.

Think of any of the players who have made a difference since guitarists began to plug in anticipating and moving into the rock era and McCann will have fashioned his own response to their enduring influence. Yet above all he’s evolved under the benevolent shadow of John McLaughlin.

The record is released in mid-September via bassist Michael Janisch’s London-based label, Whirlwind.
