Only on import at the moment – the UK/Ireland release is looking like 28 August Martin Tingvall’s new solo album Distance arrives three years on from the groundbreaking En ny dag (‘A New Day’).

Best known for his leadership of the New Melodic Tingvall Trio and whose most recent album was last year’s Beat, Tingvall is one of the most original new generation jazz piano talents on the wider European scene.

As he charts his own course, navigating the individuality and freedom of latter-day jazz via his own compositional ideas, only the map and compass of the 19th century classical tradition and the sublimated strains of Swedish folk music for guidance, no one even remotely sounds like him.

Inspired by travels to Iceland the ‘distance’ in the title refers to the Hamburg-based Swede’s sensing of pervasive dislocation that he sees exists in a social media landscape where real person-to-person interaction has regrettably become less important.
