One of the more imaginative touring projects doing the rounds mainly on the festival circuit this summer has got to be the pairing of Sly & Robbie – the famed Jamaican reggae drum and bass rhythm team known for their work with Gregory Isaacs – alongside Norwegian ambient futurejazz pioneer Nils Petter Molvær.

Playing the Barbican in London on Friday trumpeter Molvær, whose most recent album Switch was released last year, has constantly sought new musical situations throughout his career most notably on Khmer as well as more guesting with Spin Marvel the acclaimed prog-jazz outfit led by Martin France whose excellent album Infolding was released in February. Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare are no strangers to working with jazz musicians including even avant composer Henry Threadgill over the years as well as appearing with rock and pop artists including Mick Jagger and Madonna.
