Gregory Porter has made a dizzying number of collaborations as a featured artist or guest over the last few years. Let’s think: there was that David Murray appearance; last Christmas a beyond-the-grave swinging collaboration with Julie London; and back in the spring an appearance on the newly released Van Morrison duets album. Coming up in September there’s also an ace new turn with Lizz Wright.

But most current, and probably most audacious in terms of connecting with today’s hitmakers, arrives with an official release next month on a collaboration Porter has made with the house duo Disclosure (aka Howard and Guy Lawrence). Disclosure’s 2013 album Settle went to number 1 in the UK album charts the band also nominated for a Mercury getting the critics behind them in the process. Porter is on ‘Holding On’ (audio above, that’s one hell of a long note at the beginning), the first single from their new album, and which was debuted on Annie Mac’s influential Radio 1 dance music show. Porter has commented on the project: “I’m interested in all different types of music and different ways to get my musical expressions out, so I’m excited about it.” SG

Porter is playing Glastonbury on 27 June and tops the bill at Mostly Jazz in Birmingham next month.
