Live dates in England and Ireland as part of a European tour aren’t until the autumn but the record the band will be touring has just come out.

In a year, post-Birdman and for all the wrong reasons in the wake of Whiplash, when we have all become that little bit more obsessed with jazz drummers this should feed that inner mounting flame one more time. It’s the new Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet’s Family First trailed in the video, above. Guiliana, people with long memories will recall from the groundbreaking 2010 Phronesis Alive album, and fans with shorter memories from his remarkable presence in Mehliana chopping up beats to jaw-dropping effect on ‘Just Call Me Nige’ as he and Brad Mehldau went on a game changing trip of a lifetime on 2014’s Taming the Dragon. Released on the drummer’s own label the Family First band finds the drummer joined by saxophonist Jason Rigby plus Guiliana’s former colleague in the Avishai Cohen Gently Disturbed trio pianist Shai Maestro and bassist Chris Morrissey.
