Freedom: The Art of Improvisation festival held over two days from 27-28 June promises to be a meeting point for many London-based improvisers and a highlight of the summer jazz calendar.

Held at London jazz club the Vortex presented by Warriors international the festival follows on from a series of Freedom Sessions. The festival combines workshops, DJ sets and live music the event championed by vibist Orphy Robinson and singer Cleveland Watkiss the distinguished Jazz Warriors artistic figureheads of the event.

Saturday highlights include live sets from Amplifier featuring Byron Wallen and poet HBK Finn and the Xenicibis Ensemble featuring harpist Tori Handsley. Tony Kofi’s Sphinx trio will play homage to Ornette Coleman and also expect a freedom jam and DJ session. Sunday opens with a Steve Beresford improvisation workshop followed by the Freeform Strings and the appearance of Rowland Sutherland’s new quartet plus the appearance of Black Top.

DJs taking part over the weekend include Solar’s Ruth Fisher and Kevin Le Gendre (Now’s the Time) plus legendary Straight No Chaser editor Paul Bradshaw.

The festival will be launched with Jez Nelson and Chris Phillips DJ sets at Dalston venue Brilliant Corners on the Kingsland Road.
