Switching to the highly atmospheric Sugar Club on Lower Leeson Street – a venue Marlbank was indeed lucky to catch Cymande play back in the autumn – Lucky Peterson hits Dublin next month for a much anticipated gig.

The singer-guitarist-organist’s latest album The Son of a Bluesman (Jazz Village) released last year found Peterson on great form in the studio, the sort of blues album you might think doesn’t, or just couldn’t, exist any more.

Featuring the titanic drums of Raul Valdes well captured in this Dallas studio album made in June 2013, the ‘listening’ bass guitar of Timothy Waites, and lively soulful guitar of Shawn Kellerman, all set to play Dublin in Lucky’s band plus Marvin Hollie on keys it’s an album about renewal: dusting yourself down and getting on with life.

A cover of Bobby Blue Bland’s ‘I Pity the Fool’ from Two Steps From the Blues arranged like a Ray Charles record with a great opening thump to it, the words tumbling out of Lucky's mouth, just one of the many treasures here. Catching Lucky live in such a great venue makes his first appearance in Ireland an even hotter prospect. Stephen Graham
