Trogon debuted in late-2013 with Tower Casa (Babel), this Afro-Cuban flavoured band led by trumpeter Nick Smart, who initially made his name as a recording artist with his Remembering Nick Drake album joined by his band of the time, Black Eyed Dog.

The band, which takes its name from the national bird of Cuba, on the album featured new tunes by Smart and by imaginative pianist Kishon Khan (known for his work with Arun Ghosh), plus arrangements of Kenny Wheeler and Stan Sulzmann compositions, are back in action next week featuring Smart with Denny “Jimmy” Martinez, guitarist Alex Munk, Khan and Pigfoot drummer Paul Clarvis for a gig at the Vortex on Tuesday (3 March) playing music from Tower Casa.

With a slightly different line-up (including the appearance of Troyka’s Chris Montague) Trogon also play Jez Nelson’s Jazz in the Round on 27 April.

Trogon above are caught live playing ‘Everybody Else’s Song’ based on Kenny Wheelers Everybodys Song But My Own
