With EST changing the face of European jazz and making their presence felt globally from the beginning of the new millennium way beyond the lifetime of the band it’s always wise to keep an ear on what’s happening on the current Swedish jazz scene. And at this year’s Grammis, the Swedish music industry’s annual gathering, winning in the jazz category just announced were the Daniel Karlsson trio for their album Fusion for Fish (Brus & Knaster).

Karlsson was born in 1973 in Kristinehamn and studied music at Royal Music Academy in Stockholm, gigging later with the drummer Fredrik Noren's hard bop band an outfit Esbjörn Svensson and Dan Berglund played in back in the early part of their careers. Karlsson founded Oddjob in the 90s and picked up a Swedish Grammy in the early-noughties for his work with the band. Karlsson also featured on EST drummer Magnus Öström’s superb 2013 album Searching for Jupiter. ‘Cousin Cuisine’ from Fusion for Fish featuring Karlsson with bassist Kristian Lind and drummer Fredrik Rundqvist is featured above in the video. The other nominees in the jazz category were Fire Orchestra for Enter; the Goran Kajfes Subtropic Arkestra for The Reason Why vol. 2; Jonas Kullhammar for Gentlemen (Original Motion Picture Jazz Tracks); and Wildbirds & Peacedrums for Rhythm.
