Veteran acid jazz outfit Brand New Heavies’ latest album Sweet Freaks (earMusic) is released later in the autumn.

Their tenth long-player, joining guitarist/vocalist Simon Bartholomew, bassist Andrew Levy, and drummer/vocalist Jan Kincaid, is singer Dawn Joseph who also appeared on 2013’s Forward an album that marked their return after a long break.

Title track ‘Sweet Freeek’, the opener, is easily the standout with its frothy vocal and a Bernard Edwards-like bounce to it, the chorus with Joseph’s lively vocal building on you’re such a freeek you’re making me weep/I'm stuck to your beat. Layering on soul, pop and funk in archetypal acid jazz style as it goes along, the album includes a funky organ-soaked cover of Peter Gabriel’s ‘Sledgehammer’ set up by a JBs-like horn arrangement.
