Recorded in Hart Plaza during last year’s Detroit Jazz Festival this is the opening track from the swinging Mack Avenue artist family band album to be released in the UK/Ireland on 1 September the idea first run out last year on a similar release, with a few new faces in saxophonist/flautist Kirk Whalum, and vibist Warren Wolf, involved this time. Helmed by bassist Rodney Whitaker the tunes include band-written material by Wolf (‘Soul Sister’ itself), trumpeter Sean Jones, pianist Aaron Diehl, and drummer Carl Allen, with the traditional gospel song ‘I Want Jesus to Walk With Me’ among the non-originals and standards material. The John Lewis and Dizzy Gillespie tune ‘Two Bass Hit’ closes an amiable album that’s strongly rooted in the modern post-bop gospel soaked mainstream US jazz tradition recorded in front of an appreciative crowd.
