Known for his work with Steve Lacy over many years distinguished French bassist Jean-Jacques Avenel died on 12 August aged 66, having suffered from cancer. Known primarily for his work in free jazz his playing credits over a long career included, besides his work with Lacy, engagements with Don Cherry, Butch Morris, and David Murray. With Lacy he appeared on more than two dozen albums. RIP
