Idris Muhammad passed away on 29 July aged 74. As a teenager, Keith Morris as he was still known before converting to Islam in the 60s, the drummer, from New Orleans, played on Fats Domino’s hit ‘Blueberry Hill. Later he was a member of Lou Donaldson’s band for two years in the 60s taking part in many sessions for Prestige in the early-1970s. His records as a leader include Black Rhythm Revolution for Prestige and Turn This Mutha Out on Kudu. Muhammad's sideman appearances include a number of albums with Pharoah Sanders including Jewels of Thought, and later several albums with Ahmad Jamal for the Birdology and Dreyfus labels stretching from the mid-1990s up to just five years ago.
