he latest trad project to breathe new life into antique jazz also happens to revive Impulse Records once more to a certain extent. But it's odd in a way as the revered label was poles apart in the 1960s, all about the New Thing, free jazz and pushing the music forward into challenging territory rather than taking a considered look at past glories. Notwithstanding this oddity of branding the work of New Orleans pianist Henry Butler, slide trumpeter Steven Bernstein (better known for Sex Mob) and their Hot 9 Viper's Drag released on Monday 21 July takes us back to Jelly Roll Morton-era New Orleans in suitably raucous style as the video above strongly hints.
