Blue Note say Jason Moran's All Rise: A Joyful Elegy For Fats Waller will be released in mid-September. That's a US release date, there’s no date for an international release so far. The album is a collaboration with the singer Meshell Ndegeocello whose latest album Comet, Come To Me has just been released. Moran’s concept places Waller’s music within the context of a modern dance party also featuring, among others, Moran’s trio the Bandwagon and horns. One of the year’s most eagerly anticipated albums, Moran’s earlier inspired take on Thelonious Monk’s landmark 1959 concert at Town Hall set a new benchmark for modern treatments of historic piano-based jazz. Our impressions of Waller, who died 70 years ago on 15 December, could well be radically altered and reassessed.
