Monty
He's just turned 70 and there’s no stopping Monty Alexander, who returns for trio dates at Ronnie Scott’s on 16-17 June.

His latest album features a remarkable triumvirate of Ramsey Lewis, George Benson, and Joe Sample on the touching ‘Love Notes’, a song on which Monty even adds a throaty vocal.

Fusing the musical traditions of Jamaica, rocksteady and reggae high among them, within mainstream jazz piano traditions has been an enduring preoccupation of Alexander’s for years, and remains so on Harlem-Kingston Express Vol 2: The River Rolls On, one of this approachs most sophisticated distillations to date.

With a big input of Philly and Detroit soul folded in, the inclusion of ‘People Make the World Go Round’ works wonders, and on a Jamaican-ised ‘What’s Going On (Wa’a Gwan)’ particularly, there’s a feelgood-all-over sort of glow that’s so clear.

Monty is at Ronnies with bassist Hassan Shakur, and drummer Obed Calvaire
