Albare
Ahead of some touring next month, Albare’s The Road Ahead  (Enja, ***) gets a UK release at the end of June.  With dates at the Frome festival on 9 July, Birmingham two days later, as well as London on 16 July, and Marlborough on the 19th, Moroccan-born guitarist Albert Dadon, who’s better known for founding the Australian Bell awards and as chair of the Melbourne Jazz Festival, here in a laidback set up with pianist Phil Turcio, bassist Yunior Terry, and drummer Pablo Bencid. There is also a vocals spot from the very soulful Allan Harris on Stevie Wonder’s ‘Overjoyed’ even if it is spoiled a bit by the abrupt cut-off at the end of the track. Mostly the tunes are by Albare or Albare co-writing with Turcio, the guitarist traversing a playing style that falls in the driving passages somewhere between Pat Metheny and George Benson’s sound, with atmospheric north African touches on the two ‘Road Ahead’ pieces that bookend the album adding additional textural distinctiveness.
