The Portuguese capital Lisbon each summer hosts one of the jazz avant garde’s leading festivals, and this year it’s the 31st running of that very festival, Jazz em Agosto, from 1-10 August, a ten-concert programme with a concert each day taking place outdoors in an amphitheatre at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Heavily guitar-themed, this year sees the debut of James Blood Ulmer and his Memphis Blood Blues band featuring Vernon Reid. Marc Ribot, Fred Frith, Marc Ducret, Keiji Haino, Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Bill Laswell are also to appear while the duo of Evan Parker, above with Matthew Shipp, is another big highlight.
