It’s looking like a 23 June release for Elan Mehler’s new solo piano album Early Sunday Morning. Standards ‘Come Rain or Come Shine’, ‘Don’t Explain’, ‘It Never Entered My Mind’ and originals including ‘Abigail’s Waltz’ and the ‘Early Sunday Morning suite appear on the record, the latest from the tall Brooklynite (above) whose earlier trio record Being There, Here was released in 2013, the Scheme For Thought pianist’s folk-like gem, ‘Waltz Ferwerda’ the highlight. And there are folk influences here too on this new record, again to be released by Netherlands label Challenge Records notably a version of Woody Guthrie’s ‘Way Over Yonder In the Minor Key’ lyrics Billy Bragg set music to and recorded with Wilco.
