Avey is a free player essentially and has now signed to Whirlwind Recordings and releases his debut for the label in May. Haitian-themed it's called Authority Melts from Me. Avey won the Monk competition for composition a few years ago, and has received a new jazz-work commissioning and ensemble grant from Chamber Music America. This allowed him to travel to Haiti to record a voodoo ceremony and to write a suite grounded in rhythms found in Haitian voodoo drumming. The album is also, according to the label, a homage to the Haitian Revolution and features the pianist plus alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón, guitarist Ben Monder, double bassist Thomson Kneeland, and drummer Jordan Perlson.
