According to Business Week 23m jazz albums were sold in the US a decade ago, quoting industry body Nielsen SoundScan. The figure in 2013? Five million. Look at their graph (above) which covers both physical sales of CDs and downloads. There could be any number of factors for this and remember it says nothing about the state of the art, just the state of sales, but nonetheless it makes grim reading. What the comparable figures in the UK are if they even exist doesn't bear thinking about.
