Mammal Hands. Two words. Innocuous on their own. Quite extraordinary somehow when put together. But who are these Hands? Well, they're support to piano trio of the moment GoGo Penguin at their Kings Place gig in London in a few weeks and you can glean a small insight into what they're about from this YouTube video, their sound particularly as the tune unfolds well within the Pharoah Sanders sound dimension of spiritual jazz in the case of saxophonist Jordan Smart. And yet I also couldn't help but think of Portico Quartet's Jack Wyllie at the beginning of his solo for some reason. Keyboardist Nick Smart (clearly not the head of jazz at the Royal Academy of Music) reminds me slightly of Brooklyn pianist Elan Mehler. The trio is completed by drummer Jesse Barrett. Mammal Hands are to debut on Gondwana Records home to GoGo Penguin and Nat Birchall, so we’ll probably be hearing a lot more from them later in the year. SG
