The final piece of the jigsaw in the “magnificent seven” raft of ECM vinyl already signalled for release this month and written about exclusively in these pages before the Christmas break sees ECM reissuing a rare Keith Jarrett album.

It’s the little known often sublime chamber jazz album Arbour Zena, Jarrett recorded in the autumn of 1975 with the Belonging Band’s Jan Garbarek on tenor and soprano saxophone; the great Charlie Haden from the American quartet (1971-6); plus a string orchestra comprised of members of the Radio Symphony Orchestra, Stuttgart with Sarajevo-born conductor Mladen (Bobby) Gutesha who also conducted the similar Luminessence (even if crucially both Jarrett and Haden were absent) recorded in 1974.

Arbour Zena

Planned for a 27 January reissue the same day as the other six releases it joins another Jarrett-related curiosity, Ritual, the Dennis Russell Davies album featuring Davies performing on piano the Keith Jarrett composition ‘Ritual’.

Arbour Zena was recorded at the famed Tonstudio Bauer in Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart and has three tracks: ‘Runes’ (dedicated to the unknown by Jarrett); ‘Solara March’ (dedicated to the great Catalan cellist Pablo Casals, and not forgetting the sun); and the long ‘Mirrors’ (dedicated to Jarrett’s teachers).

The recording came 10 months after The Köln Concert and four months on from the studio date when Jarrett featured on Kenny Wheeler’s Gnu High.
