Don Sleet is, was, and will ever be a mystery figure. Website Jazz Wax told his story evocatively several years ago; and now a new app made in France adds to the legend. And what a story it is. A hard bopper born in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1938 who grew up in San Diego, the boy wonder played with the San Diego Symphony, shifted to Los Angeles, and studied with Shorty Rogers where he hung with the cream of the West Coast scene. An habitué of the Lighthouse, Sleet in 1961 made All Members for Jazzland, the album that the cognoscenti know him for, a session featuring saxophonist Jimmy Heath, and yes, Wynton Kelly on piano, Ron Carter, bass, and Jimmy Cobb, drums. That was it, and in 1986 Sleet died in obscurity at the age of just 47. The app is beautifully done, a labour of love by Nicolas Rabel, with great graphics, photos, period memorabilia, spoken word, music, and a timeline. Let it sleet. http://www.ideo-libris.com
