There's clearly an appetite among the jazz piano greats for solo concerts at the moment (Brad Mehldau in Dublin recently, Herbie Hancock at the London Jazz Festival in 2012) and the latest milestone gig in this regard follows confirmation by promoters Serious that Chick Corea is to play the Barbican in London for a gig on 19 May. Corea unveiled his hot new band The Vigil in London in March but it was in 2012 at the Barbican last year, a venue Corea has played many times, that the 20-time Grammy winner performed in duo with vibes great Gary Burton. Tim Garland, who will make his debut for Edition records in May, joined that night to play soprano sax during the encore  “jamming" on Chick’s classic composition ‘La Fiesta’ and Monk’s ‘Blue Monk’. But in May Corea walks on to the stage for that rare beast, the solo piano London concert hall gig.
