The distinguished reeds player and jazz composer John Surman has been announced as one of the winners in the 13 categories of the 2013 British Composer Awards, the BASCAs.

Surman won for a piece called ‘Lifelines’ in the jazz composition category in a shortlist that included works by BBC New Generation artist Trish Clowes, and Tim Garland.

Harrison Birtwistle, Colin Matthews, Brian Elias, James MacMillan, Nigel Clarke, Joseph Phibbs, George Benjamin, Matthew Martin, Ed Baxter/Chris Weaver, James Redwood, Peter McGarr, and Toshio Hosokawa were the other winners.

It's been a great year for Surman as his album Saltash Bells also won in both the Jazz FM awards in January, and the Parliamentary Jazz Awards in May.
