Jazzcd.no, 6th set: Jazz From Norway 2014 a multi-CD compilation showcasing Norwegian jazz, issued earlier in the autumn, provides a broad sweep of recent, new, and upcoming jazz from Norway.

A 3-CD collection comprising some 43 tracks in all described by the compilers as providing “a good picture of the Norwegian jazz scene today, ranging from mainstream to more modern forms, including what has come to be known as the Nordic sound”, it’s the latest in the series begun in 2002, and was compiled by the Norsk Jazz Forum organisation in Oslo supported and produced in cooperation with the Norwegian ministry of foreign affairs.

In the album’s notes BBC Radio 3 Late Junction presenter Fiona Talkington writes: “If there’s one thing you can be sure of, whether from established artists or newer names, there is a trademark Norwegian high quality of technique, production and sound.”

So what's included to justify this claim? Well, the first disc includes a track from Mira, the new as yet unreleased ECM album by the Belleville bass/sax/drums trio of Arild Andersen, Tommy Smith, and Paolo Vinaccia. Andersen and Smith, along with Montpellier-born drummer Patrice Héral performed at Ronnie Scott’s on Friday as part of the opening night Jazz on 3 show, one of the most chamber-like sections of a great evening of eclectic jazz http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03h3xdd.

Followers of The Impossible Gentlemen will surely be interested in the fifth track of the first CD from Terje Gewelt’s Resonant Music album Stepping Stone, featuring the bassist with the Gentlemen’s drum livewire Adam Nussbaum here joining Gewelt and guitarist Staffan William-Olsson on the jazz-rock fusion number ‘Missing Bells’.

Then there's the compelling Mats Eilertsen trio track ‘Sails Set’ at the end of the first disc another evocative highlight of Jazzcd.no, 6th set: Jazz From Norway 2014 featuring as it does Food drummer Thomas Strønen and the Dutch pianist Hermen Fraanje, the latter who along with the remarkable cellist Ernst Reijseger and singer/percussionist Mola Sylla play the Fumbally Café in Dublin [http://thefumbally.ie] on Saturday following London shows last weekend.

The second disc opens with ‘Boxing’ from the Edition album Birds of Bergen saxophonist Marius Neset, currently the hottest property coming out of Norway, and this CD also includes strong tracks from Pixel, whose ‘Be Mine’ is also included, as compelling a composition as bassist/singer Ellen Andrea Wang's quartet’s signature tune ‘Call Me’ already heard by live audiences in the UK.

The third album includes ‘Drawing an Arc’ featuring the duo of singer Sidsel Endresen and guitarist Stian Westerhus, two artists who performed at last weekend’s Scene Norway 2 festival in London curated by Fiona Talkington. For a power surge and burst of Thing-like fervour check out the remarkable quintet Atomic’s ‘Available Exits’ to round off a burst of current Norwegian jazz listening the set offers in quantity as well as quality.
