A National Concert Hall Dublin date has been added for 27 October to follow on from Dino Saluzzi’s appearance at the Cork Jazz Festival the night before. The Argentinian bandoneonist is touring with cellist Anja Lechner and tenor saxophonist/clarinettist Felix ‘Cuchara’ Saluzzi. It’s part of a seven-country tour where they will perform music partly taken from the album Navidad de Los Andes, and the tour comes ahead of a new Saluzzi recording session with Manfred Eicher at Rainbow in Oslo. At the beginning of 2013 ECM released documentary makers Norbert Wiedmer and Enrique Ros’ El Encuentro on DVD where Saluzzi comes across as a pater familias, the head of a family band, and someone who as he says himself uses “doubt” to channel his musical ideas like a car needs petrol. It’s almost a Jesuitical concept, and Saluzzi in a fictional form could be the main character of a Graham Greene novel. Lechner, is a dynamic interested presence who breathes life into the documentary, and this film like the earlier Sounds and Silence increases our understanding of what makes this significant composer and performer tick. But he’s still, nonetheless, something of an enigma.
