Joined by tabla player the brilliant bhangra innovator Kuljit Bhamra, Red Note Ensemble are to release Reels To Ragas on 18 November, their label Keda Records has confirmed. A musical coming together of Scottish traditional reels and Indian ragas the album was recorded in Southall earlier this year and also produced by Bhamra, known for his work with saxophonist Andy Sheppard and who appeared as a member of Sheppard’s cult Moments in Colour quintet. Reels To Ragas includes ‘Prabhanda’, ‘Jhalla’, and ‘Tihai’ by John Mayer, the legendary jazz violinist known alongside Joe Harriott in the latter part of the 1960s for their groundbreaking double quintet’s Indo Jazz Suite and Indo Jazz Fusions Volume 1 and 2. There is also traditional Scottish music, and music by members of Red Note as well as by Bhamra. Red Note Ensemble founded in 2008 here features the Britten Sinfonia’s leader Jacqueline Shave, violist Clare Finnimore, and founder cellist Robert Irvine, with a vocal on Robert Burns' 'Ca The Yowes' by Stephanie Irvine.
